What is Jungian Therapy, also known as Depth Psychology?

A complete answer would require hundreds of pages and, much like Yoga, the best way to understand it is through direct experience. Nevertheless, here is a brief introduction.

Jungian Therapy seeks to understand the mind, body, psyche and spirit as interconnected aspects of the human experience. Its aim is to support the process of individuation — Carl Jung's term for the integration of the different aspects of our personality.

Rather than focusing only on symptoms, Jungian Therapy explores the deeper roots of emotional suffering and inner conflict. It works with complexes, projections, the shadow and archetypes through the analysis of dreams, drawings, myths, fairy tales, works of art and other symbolic expressions.

Jung

In simple terms:

• Complexes are clusters of memories, emotions and perceptions, often formed around significant life experiences or emotional wounds.

• Projection occurs when we unconsciously attribute to others qualities or feelings that actually belong to ourselves.

• The Shadow represents the hidden or repressed aspects of our personality that remain outside conscious awareness.

• Archetypes are universal patterns that shape human experience, such as the Mother, the Wise Elder or the Hero.

These elements belong to the personal unconscious — aspects of ourselves that we may not consciously recognise, yet which profoundly influence our emotions, relationships and behaviour.

In Jungian Therapy, dreams are regarded as meaningful expressions of the unconscious. They help us process daily experiences, reveal inner dynamics and offer guidance on the path of individuation and personal growth.

“Dreams are letters that the Self writes to us every night, telling us to do a little more of this, a little less of that, to turn in one direction rather than another. Looking back over the course of a lifetime, we can recognise a pattern, as though the Self had a plan for us — a kind of destiny."”

My Journey into Jungian Psychology

For many years, I had heard about the work of Carl Jung, but it was through meeting Fátima Ponte that I found the opportunity to explore his ideas in greater depth.

From that moment on, I immersed myself in the study of myths, archetypes, the personal and collective unconscious, complexes, the shadow, symbols, synchronicity and many other aspects of Jungian Psychology. Along the way, I came to recognise the profound connection between Jung's understanding of the psyche and Eastern philosophy, particularly Yoga.

Since then, I have remained committed to deepening both my self-understanding and my study of Jungian thought, seeking to understand how these concepts are expressed in everyday life. Naturally, this path also led me to begin offering Jungian Therapy, building on my previous experience as an Ayurvedic Yoga Massage therapist and my long-standing Yoga practice, both of which laid a solid foundation for this work.
